I miss On Location. (It doesn't run reliably under system 7.5). This is my simplistic attempt to knock up some of the key functionality I miss. In a multi-user environment, where you have budget for a server, I recommend AppleSearch for indexing your documents. I wanted to have a way to quickly retrieve a list of documents on a mounted disk that contain a given word. FileIndexer trades memory for speed. It builds a sorted list of unique words (not case sensitive), and then keeps a list of the files that contain each word. Especially useful when used as a helper for a web browser or when you just want to decompress two images at once. Through the use of it's own virtual memory scheme, Jade can have many (around 30+ files at the minimum parition setting) files simultaneously _regardless of their size_ This is because decompressed images only occupy around 20K RAM and the actual image is stored on disk. Jade can also display JPEG's at their full size or in a small (but quick!) preview size in addition to the standard screen size. This coupled with a delete file hot key allows users to sift and filter through many images with ease. new stuff: -- Full Screen, full featured Slide Show -- GIF bugs fixed -- PICT file saving is no longer limited by memory -- New window arrangement options -- many other minor bug fixes and minor features Jade is FAT. KeyQuencer is a powerful and solid macro engine designed to use very little memory, which can perform complex tasks when you press a specific key combination. KeyQuencer uses a very simple scripting approach and can be extended through external extensions. The bundled extensions provide lots of power and can replace many common system additions with substantial memory savings. KeyQuencer's macros can be lauched by HyperCard, AppleScript, FileMaker Pro and any other application that supports sending Apple Events. The Macro Editor can now execute macros on remote Macs over a network. Programmers can easily build their own extensions and integrate them into the KeyQuencer environment, or add KeyQuencer support to ther applications and extensions. New in version 1.2.2: - Third-party software such as Square One 3.0 and OtherMenu can now obtain a list of all the available macros and use it to interface with KeyQuencer. Pressing command-shift-return when no macro is running won't kill the keystroke any longer (which is good news for FullWrite users). All known bugs have been fixed, including an incompatibility with the PaperPort extension, macros hung by some dialogs, problems with the work-around for Microsoft apps, possible CopyScreen crashes, SelectWindow problems, and many more. The Control Panel no longer invokes Apollo actions tied to the power key, and the Macro Editor doesn't display a "File not open" error when using the "Save as..." command twice. Vers. 1.0 Demo This is a sample of the Opera (Operetta, Ballet) Database (Filemaker Pro 2), on which I base my Opera WWW Pages reachable at: http://joshua.micronet.it/italian/mariobiondi/opere/diz_opera_.html It is, I repeat, *simply a Demo*, in which you will find the 129 recorded or broascasted performances I know of operas by two very popular composers: Mozart and Puccini. You will discover who sang what and with whom and directed by whom and when, in which opera Mimi weeps and dies, and in which opera Zerlina shows her pretty face to a certain villain... and so on. My real database lists (today, dec. 27, 1995) almost 1150 performances of 475 operas by 170 composers and I update it almost daily. People who have visited my WWW pages (about 2500 in 8 months) know very well how rich they are. If you don't know them, visit them now. I am thinking of distributing my complete FM database on a shareware basis. I still do not know whether I will distribute it on line or on a floppy disk. I only know I will ask opera lovers who want it to send me around 25 $ (also payable through credit card or other). It is a very powerful instrument to study opera performances or at least to decide *which performance* to buy (in case you do not own already one or ten). When you will have the database, with all its data, you will be able to update it with *your* operas, making it even more powerful and useful. Check out this sample and my WWW pages and decide. If you think you are interested (but *really interested*, let's not waste time, which in a way is money), just email me at: mbiondi@micronet.it If you are not interested in my complete database, simply enjoy this file, update it with your data and be my friends. If enough people will answer, I will put up all the necessary bric-=E0-brac. My updates (I go on crazily buying operas and recording data on my personal database) will be regularly posted for you here and in other sites. This patch will make the activity indicator in version 1.61 of RAM Doubler active by default. The activity indicator is a small white dot (a single pixel) in the upper left-hand corner of the screen that blinks when RAM Doubler is doing its stuff. (Because some Macs, such as powerbooks, have screens without rounded corners, this indicator might be invisible.) I find the indicator useful because it aids me in determining why my system is not running as quickly as I think it should be. With Apple's virtual memory, I can hear the hard disk spin, and see the hard drive activity light. As distributed, RAM Doubler provides no such indication of its efforts. I recently purchased a PowerWave 604/132 from Power Computing (PCI bus, running MacOS 7.5.2). While I am awed by the speed of this beast, I am dismayed by the bewildering number of software conflicts & bugs that have appeared (upgrading from 7.0.1 on a IIsi). Not entirely surprising, given the large collection of extensions and older software that I have accumulated over the last several years. I am gradually working these out, but would be interested in any hints/suggestions/advice on the following: Norton Disk Doctor I've been using Norton Disk Doctor for some time now; the current version I'm using is 3.1.2. I have found that NDD 3.1.2 will *not* run under this OS, for me. I've tried reinstalling it, wiping the prefs, turning extensions off, pretty much all the usual maneuvers. NDD starts up OK, but when I begin to examine a volume, it crashes hard just after the beginning of the first phase of the analysis (no error message, just a system freeze). I've written to Symantec tech support, but so far no response. Yes, I can use Disk First Aid or MacTools (even NDD 2!), but I really prefer NDD 3. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? I know that NDD 3.1.3 exists, although from what I can gather, it seems like a minor update. Would this function better? If so, I would be glad to upgrade, but have seen no patch for this, even at Symantec's site on AOL. I'd really prefer to avoid buying the whole package again, and I don't need the terabyte volume capacity of NDD 3.2. Suitcase II I find this extension/utility very useful, as well. I have the latest (last?) version 2.1.4p3, and it was rock-solid on my IIsi. On the new system, it seems to result in some very nasty conflicts and bus errors. I have heard that it can run on this OS, and have followed all of Symantec's FAQ suggestions on installing it, etc. I suspect this is an extension conflict. However, Conflict Catcher (which is generally an excellent extension manager, btw), can't seem to isolate it. I'd like to get a dialogue going with someone who is effectively using Suitcase under 7.5.2 to try and work this out on my system. Personal LaserWriter LS Yes, I know, this is an ancient non-Postscript LaserWriter. Well, it has been just fine for my needs. Unfortunately, the LaserWriter LS driver doesn't work properly under 7.5.2; it prints, but the font spacing and other details are off. Tech support at Power Computing recommended using the LaserWriter 300 driver, and this works, but it is *slow*. I don't care if it takes awhile to print in the background, but spooling to disk takes much too long (much longer than it did on my lowly IIsi), and I can't continue with other tasks while this is going on. Does anyone know of a faster printer driver for the LaserWriter LS, that works on 7.5.2/PCI? FaxSTF I have been using version 2.2.3 of this product for awhile with no problems. Under 7.5.2, I can get it to send faxes, but I have to disable almost all other system extensions, and even then, I can't adjust the settings (such as auto answer). I would happily buy a newer fax software package, but I have noticed that others have had significant problems, even with current versions of various fax utilities, and I'm not inclined to purchase something unless I'm reasonably sure it will work. Any recommendations for fax software that works *well* under 7.5.2? (BTW, will Global Fax software work with other than Teleport modems?) Thanks in advance for any assistance. Please email replies to me and I will definitely post back summaries of advice leading to the successful resolution of any of these problems. My employers are looking for a *commercial* encryption package that will allow them to send UU-coded binary files securely via the Net. The only problem appears to be that the files will be generated on a Mac and received on a PC. The obvious thing is to transfer the files to the PC and encrypt them there before transmitting, but if we could encrypt them on the Mac once they are generated, it would streamline the process a little. So we need a cross-platform encryption method. When attemping to open a Word 5.1a document (Word 5.1a is installed on my HD), I repeatedly get a screen that says "CHK error" & has a restart button that, fortunately, always works (so far). The error screen shows up with about every 10th Word doc I try to open--on the average--& only when trying to open a Word doc. I can't find any pattern, not even in terms of regularity, as the CHK error shows up with varying frequency. The Word docs are all small, mostly 12k, none over 24k. Neumann) Subject: Corel All-Movie CD-ROM Corel All-Movie Guide Well, it's too late for Christmas, but if you're thinking of buying the Corel All-Movie Guide on CD-ROM -- think again. IMHO it's distinctly a bad buy. The jewel case says it can be run directly from the CD-ROM, although installing some software on the hard disk will make it run faster. The Read Me file says you really need to install 13MB of software to make it run at all. In actual fact it won't run unless you install almost 20MB of software on your hard disk! The installer is a joke. It gives you two options, easy and custom. Custom? Sort of. In Corel terms "custom" means you either install everything -- or you install nothing at all. The guide itself is a FoxPro application. Now FoxPro is considered to be one of the fastest DBMSs around, especially on the Mac. So the fact that the guide feels like cold molasses on my Quadra 605 with a quad-speed CD-ROM drive is probably due to bad programming (and it's not PPC-native, either). (As it happens, I own FoxPro/Mac and several databases I use regularly run quite smoothly.) The CD-ROM drive is not factor, really: once it took a full minute to close one window, and all this time it didn't access the CD-ROM even once. It was doing some intensive work on the hard disk. And it's not the multimedia either. All the multimedia you'll see are one or two bad quality QuickTime clips of actors speaking (no movie excerpts). All information about movies is exclusively textual. So it's all down to bad programming. But after all, what can you expect from a company which has no Mac experience? -- Florin Neumann florin@quartz.geology.utoronto.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Dec 1995 08:38:37 -0600 From: rpat@mtn.org (Paddy Atherton) Subject: Hard Drive Re-Partitioning John W. Yes, it would make the lives of purchasing agents easier, in that they wouldn't have to learn about multiple computer platforms. Please be advised, however that many of us in the private sector have learned DOS, MAC and UNIX...systems. This is not rocket science. It may come as something of a shock to the governmental system, but there are LAN/WAN systems in the world which service DOS, MAC and UNIX machines. And many tax payers resent employing lazy/"computer-challenged" employees. Surely a state with "accommodations" ranging from Gov. Weld to our Senior Senator, MIT to Umass. Dartmouth, Dover to Holyoke can accommodate Mac and DOS computers???????? Surely we can find and employ purchasing agents who understand both systems? This happens no matter what key combination I use (command M, command W-it doesn't matter). This happened before when I used Eudora Light and continues now that I use Eudora Pro 2.1.3. Is there a way to stop this? Is there a way to make the programmer's box leave the screen without restarting (which is what I always do)? I'm using a PowerMac 6200/75 32/500. It's running System 7.5.1. Thanks for any advice you can offer. This weekend I tried to install RamDoubler on an accellerated Mac Plus. Upon running the installer, I got a message that said something like: "RamDoubler cannot be run on an accellerated Plus, SE, or Classic" Kind of depressing, hmm? Didn't leave much room there for interpretation. If you heaar of a workaround, would you let me know? Thanks. This always happens when clicking the control strip modules. After clicking the control strip modules the menus also do not respond to mouse clicks for 5 to 10 seconds and then all the clicks activate one after another as saved up. I have reinstalled a new system 7.5.2 with NO extras, control panels, extensions etc etc, yet it still does this. Additionally, when opening programs, quitting programs or copying files, and other similar system activities etc it seems to take a long time and appears that the system has stopped at times. Clicking the mouse seems to wake up the system and it continues at a faster rate. (Perhaps this is deceptive as the system may only update its processing on the screen when clicked, but it does not appear to be this) When the mouse is clicked continuously the system does not stop functioning, but when the mouse is not clicked the activities slow way down and stop. Additionally when transferring email to or from my server the SD light on my modem stops blinking unless I click my mouse (this is even so sometimes when a RD-receive data light indicates that data should be sent). This indicates that the system is not responding immediately or even at all as it should. Can anyone give any clues as to what is the cause and solution for this problem? I have checked for system sleep functions and the like. All that I am aware of is under the *Powerbook control panel*: minutes until system sleep, hard disk spin down and screen dims. These are set appropriately at high values for when the computer is plugged in. I have no third party addons to further control these types of parameters. There doesn't seem to be any other control available. This function of system sleep etc was suggested as a possible cause of my problem. It does seem that the system just stops or is spaced out so to speak for no apparent reason. Perhaps there is a hardware problem? Any help in this matter is very much appreciated. Also, if anyone can supply a specific email address within Apple of someone who would be able to address this problem with the 5300 PowerPC I would be grateful. The modem appears to be losing and/or garbling characters during both text and zmodem transfers and is generally unreliable when the DTE speed is greater than 9600 baud. I have hooked up a couple of different external modems via the printer port and they have worked flawlessly at full speed (Hayes Accura 144 and Supra 288). I have turned off AppleTalk without experiencing any improvement. Are you aware of any software diagnostic aids that I can use to diagnose the problem and/or determine whether the problems are with the modem and/or computer? Has anyone else here experienced any problems with the Teleport Platinum V internal modem. Thanks. I can't use Syquest Technologies SCSI.EXE suite of programs and drivers because I can not modify any autoexec.bat or config.sys files on the network for fear of crashing/locking the system. What I'm looking for is an application that would let me read the PC formatted syquest disk that I can create using APPLE PC exchange on my MAC. Another option that I have would be to use an external PCMCIA SCSI reader on my MAC to transfer files to the PC network which DOES have PC card reader/ writers. The only source that I have found for these is from a company called Envoy data products (602)892-0954 which sells the MAC PC reader/writers STARTING at $600.00. The PC cards by the way are being used with/for a KODAK DCS 420 Digital camera. The only OTHER way out that I could think of might be to get an IOMEGA Zip drive. It is my understanding that these drives have software that can make them have a TEMPORARY drive assignment on a PC compatible that you could read >From and write to. Does anyone have experience in these areas or can anyone make a recommendation? Please respond through this forum or to my below address. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Find one which letx you extract all the lines containing "From: " at the beginning. I suppose this can be done with BBEdit and Nisus (but I don't have any self-experience).
